[EN] Our new research paper, authored by Nursima and Eren, explores how divided attention during recall affects long-term memory.

How does dividing our attention affect recalling memories from long-term memory? Do memories become blurry, or do we struggle to reach them in the first place? Previous studies examining this question produced conflicting findings. One reason for this may be that the measures used were coarse. This study is the first to use a continuous measure that also captures the quality of recall.

In this study, objects rotated in different directions are encoded into memory, and participants are then tested with their attention either divided or uninterrupted. The data are evaluated in terms of two parameters: accessibility (can the memory be recalled at all?) and precision (how precisely is the memory recalled?).

In the divided attention condition, error increased, accessibility decreased, and precision did not change. TCC, which fits the data better for all participants, also shows that memory strength drops under divided attention. When the additional memory load was removed in the second experiment, the results again went in the same direction. Taken together, the results suggest that divided attention makes it harder to access memories, while the precision of the memories that are accessed is preserved. The illustration and description of the experimental procedure are provided below.

Şekil 1, Deney Akışı - Figure 1, Experimental Procedure

[EN] The experiment consists of 60 blocks in which objects rotated in different directions are learned and tested. In each block, 6 objects are taught during the encoding phase. After a simple filler task meant to support the transfer of the learned objects into long-term memory, participants move on to the test phase. At the start of the test, the object is briefly shown upright (0.2 s) to initiate recall. Then, for 1.5 seconds, the full attention condition shows a blank screen, while the divided attention condition presents a task of finding a red star among 12 objects. The object then reappears in a random orientation, and the participant rotates it to the orientation they learned. The deviation from the correct orientation is measured as error in

[TR] Deney, farklı yöne döndürülmüş objelerin öğrenilip test edildiği 60 bloktan oluşuyor. Her blokta, kodlama kısmında 6 obje öğretiliyor.
